Update on 24 July, 2024
Media reports state that authorities are gradually restoring broadband internet in selected areas in Dhaka, as of late-night 23 July.
However, mobile internet (3G and 4G networks) is still unavailable with only 2G services (Voice calls and SMS) currently available in Bangladesh.
We remain deeply concerned about people safety in the country and urge the authorities to allow restoration of full internet services for the people of Bangladesh to access essential services at the earliest.
Update on 20 July, 2024
We have been informed by Grameenphone, Telenor Asia’s mobile operator in Bangladesh, that the local authorities ordered shutdown of the 3G and 4G networks impacting the mobile internet availability in the country since 17 July, 2024.
Grameenphone’s customers currently have no access to the internet or data services with only 2G services (voice/SMS) being available.
Telenor Asia continues to monitor the developments. We are deeply concerned with the situation and are in close dialogue with the Grameenphone management team. Grameenphone is also in contact with the authorities to ensure the reinstatement of network services at the earliest.
We hope that the authorities will allow the restoration of data services soon, as the people of Bangladesh rely on the internet to stay connected and informed as well as access essential services such as healthcare and banking.
