Sharing industrial 5G experience with Malaysia

Last week, Telenor Asia hosted a 5G experience trip for Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications to Oslo. Led by Communications Minister YB Fahmi Fadzil, the delegation observed two cases of industrial 5G in action: live demonstrations of 5G in maritime operations at Horten Harbour, as well as integrating 5G and IoT into Norwegian healthcare at Radium Hospital, a top cancer treatment hospital in Oslo.
Another key highlight of the trip was the Next Generation Communications roundtable, which brought together key stakeholders from the Norwegian Government and Communications Authority led by Digitisation and Public Governance Ministry director Jarl Fjerdingby, as well as other industry forerunners. In a dynamic exchange of ideas, Norwegian government representatives brought to the table insights into their policy approaches for building a digital society.

In turn, the Malaysian delegation expressed keen interest in hosting their counterparts at the upcoming Regulatory Roundtable Meeting (RRM) and International Regulatory Conference (IRC) involving ASEAN telecommunications regulatory bodies in Kuala Lumpur in May. YB Fahmi believes that the experience of the Norwegian telecommunications regulatory body could assist both MCMC and ASEAN in preparing for new challenges in telecommunications technologies.

“Overall, the visit here (in Oslo) has been very eye-opening because many solutions that we see here, are either on the verge of being implemented or already implemented. I also had the opportunity to learn about Telenor’s operations and also the challenges…the kind of opportunities that are presented. As a nation, we must be open to these opportunities,” YB Fahmi said in his interview with Bernama.
Håkon Bruaset Kjøl, Deputy Head of Telenor Asia and Senior Vice President, Investment Management, echoed his sentiment: “Telenor is happy to continue the dialogue initiated during the Minister’s visit and share more of its solutions to 5G network implementation in advanced markets in the future, including through CelcomDigi Berhad.”
