Telenor celebrates 25 years in Malaysia!
1999 marked the start of Telenor’s incredible journey in Malaysia through an investment in Digi, now CelcomDigi. This October, Telenor marked 25 years in the country with a celebration lunch in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
The event brought together current and former board members and colleagues from CelcomDigi, Digi alumni, Norwegian Ambassador His Excellency Morten Paulsen and other stakeholders and partners.
From Strength to Strength
Against the backdrop of a future-forward regulatory framework, and a government focused on driving digital inclusion, Digi has transformed from being a small challenger to a leading operator in Malaysia. Today, CelcomDigi stands as a local champion with the country’s widest and fastest network, serving over 20 million customers.
Håkon Bruaset Kjøl, Deputy Head of Telenor Asia, said in his opening speech, “Telenor has continued to deliver value to the customer, society and shareholders in today’s hyper-connected Malaysia through CelcomDigi. From advanced technologies to sustainability and the Nordic way of work, we have built together a shared appreciation for the highest standards and for responsible business.”
A Spotlight on Malaysia
Apart from showcasing Malaysian talent, from classical pianist Yim Shan Hui, to baker Karen Chai, who makes stunning geometric kek lapis, the celebration was also a great opportunity to reconnect with and thank friends and colleagues who have been part of Telenor’s incredible journey. Coinciding with the 25th year celebrations, the Digital Lives Decoded 2024 Malaysia country report was also launched to mark the occasion, highlighting emerging issues in AI integration and adoption in mobile phones.
As Malaysia stands in prime position to capture opportunities in 5G and AI, the focus must extend beyond mere adoption and awareness. It is crucial to equip individuals with the skills necessary to safely navigate the online world and live better digital lives, and Telenor remains committed to bringing benefits of digitalisation to Malaysia.
