20 Years of Impact: Telenor Pakistan, a Gamechanger for a Digital Nation
For two decades, Telenor Pakistan has been at the heart of Pakistan’s digital transformation by connecting people, powering progress, and shaping a more inclusive future.
With a footprint covering over 80% of the population and a customer base of over 42 million, Telenor Pakistan has bridged the digital divide through pioneering connectivity and innovation. From launching basic connectivity, expanding 4G to remote valleys like Hunza, to conducting Pakistan’s fastest 5G trial, the company consistently pushed boundaries to enable high-speed internet and unlock opportunities for commerce, education, and entrepreneurship across Pakistan.
Telenor Pakistan was part of Telenor Group since 2004. As the Norwegian company’s first greenfield venture, Telenor Pakistan was established from the ground up, allowing Telenor to introduce global best practices in network build and deployment, employee practices and work culture, and customer service to the Pakistani market. This approach enabled the company to set new benchmarks in network quality, operational efficiency, and product innovation, helping to bridge the digital divide and drive digital transformation across the country.
Beyond connectivity, Telenor Pakistan proved to be a catalyst for the country’s digital and financial inclusion with programmes such as Digital Birth Registration, Open Mind Pakistan, and Khushal Watan which empowered communities, promoted identity access, and advanced inclusive employment.
In December 2023, after a strategic review of the telco operations in Pakistan, Telenor Group announced the sale of Telenor Pakistan to Pakistan Telecommunications Company Ltd (“PTCL”), the country’s foremost integrated telco operator. The sale was completed in January 2026. This consolidation will strengthen Pakistan’s telecoms sector, creating opportunities in new areas of growth to the benefit of consumers in Pakistan.
